This is a working overview of mass confirmation, written for readers who want more than a one-paragraph summary but less than a textbook.
Reviewed 2026-03-24. Anything still debated is marked as such rather than presented as settled.
Peptide bonds are susceptible to hydrolysis under extreme pH and to enzymatic cleavage if proteases are present. Heat, oxidising agents, and prolonged exposure to light also contribute to loss of material. Aggregation can occur at high concentrations or in certain buffer systems, and it may not be visible to the eye. Storage at -20 C or below is typical for both powder and aliquoted solutions, and desiccation of the powder is preferred.
Identity and purity are usually assessed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography together with mass spectrometry. The chromatogram provides a purity estimate as a percentage of total peak area, while the mass spectrum confirms that the observed mass matches the expected value. Amino acid analysis or tandem mass spectrometry sequencing can provide additional confirmation. Reported purity figures depend on the column, gradient, and detection wavelength, so values from different laboratories are not directly comparable without method details.
Interest in the peptide grew during the 2000s and 2010s, when studies of tendon and ligament injuries in horses reported changes in lesion size after treatment. Those reports circulated widely outside the scientific literature and shaped much of the current online discussion. Subsequent reviews noted inconsistent study design, small groups, and a shortage of independent replication. Popular descriptions often blur the line between the fragment, the complete protein, and unrelated growth factors, which complicates comparisons across sources.
TB-500 is a synthetic peptide whose sequence corresponds to a short fragment near the N-terminus of thymosin beta-4, a small protein present in most mammalian cells. The fragment is commonly cited as containing the actin-binding region of the parent molecule, which is why it appears in laboratory work on cell migration and tissue repair. Suppliers distribute it as a lyophilised powder intended for research use. Its identity is defined by amino acid sequence and by the presence of an acetyl group on the N-terminal residue.
Full-length thymosin beta-4 consists of roughly forty-three amino acids and ranks among the more abundant small proteins in the cytoplasm. The fragment is much shorter, so it cannot reproduce every function attributed to the intact molecule. In cell culture, short actin-binding motifs can interfere with filament dynamics and cell movement, but such observations come from controlled experiments rather than from whole-animal work. Whether a truncated fragment produces the same effects as the parent protein remains an open question.

Thymosin beta-4 itself is a natural peptide of 43 residues found in many cell types and body fluids. Its best-characterised function is binding and sequestering actin monomers, which influences cytoskeletal dynamics. The sequence most often associated with TB-500, LKKTETQ, corresponds to part of that actin-binding region. A different fragment, Ac-SDKP, is also derived from the same parent peptide and is studied in its own right, which is one reason discussions of thymosin fragments can become confusing. The two are structurally distinct and are not interchangeable.
Interest in the fragment grew during the 1990s and 2000s, when it moved from laboratory work into sports and supplement markets. Anti-doping bodies added thymosin beta-4 fragments to prohibited lists, and a small number of adverse analytical findings have been reported in competition testing. Published controlled human trials remain scarce. Most mechanistic evidence comes from cell culture and animal models, and those studies examine endpoints such as cell migration, wound closure and inflammation markers. That evidence supports research interest but does not establish clinical benefit, and broad regenerative claims should be read as unverified.
Controlled human trials of the short fragment are scarce. Much of what appears in review articles is extrapolated from animal models or from studies of the parent protein, and literature searches return a larger body of cardiac and ophthalmic work on thymosin beta-4 than on the abbreviated peptide. Regulatory treatment differs by jurisdiction, and in several countries the material is handled as a research chemical rather than an approved therapeutic. Statements about human benefit should be read as provisional.
Biological interest in this peptide centers on its relationship to actin dynamics. Thymosin beta-4 binds monomeric actin through an LKKTET motif, and a short sequence carrying that motif can compete with other actin-binding proteins in cell-free preparations. Investigators propose that such competition shifts the balance between filament assembly and disassembly, which in turn affects how readily a cell extends protrusions and migrates. Most of the supporting observations come from cultured cells and purified protein systems rather than from intact organisms.
==== Leisure trips paid with public money ==== Ministers Anielle Franco (Racial Equality) and André Fufuca (Sports) turned the final of the 2023 Copa do Brasil, in São Paulo, into an official event (signing of a protocol of intentions with the CBF) and used a jet of the Brazilian Air Force to attend the final, accompanied by their advisers, who received daily allowances as a result of the trip. Sílvio Almeida (Human Rights) also attended, but used a commercial flight for his travel. During the event, the head of the Special Advisory Office of the Ministry of Racial Equality, Marcelle Decothé, made Instagram posts with racially offensive content that drew attention to the expressive number of international trips by the minister and her advisory staff over a period of 9 months: United States (three times), Portugal, Spain, Colombia, South Africa and Angola, consuming a good part of the ministry's budget. Marcelle Decothé was dismissed from her commissioned position. Márcio Macêdo, minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, traveled in November 2023 accompanied by subordinates to take part in an "out-of-season carnival" party in Aracaju, his electoral stronghold. The trip was made with public resources, under the allegation of an official commitment in the neighboring city. The party was recorded by the official photographer of the Presidency of the Republic and included the participation of Lurian, Lula's daughter.
== Interactions == Theoretical considerations suggest calcineurin inhibitors like ciclosporin and tacrolimus might interact with mifamurtide because of their effect on macrophages. High-dose NSAIDs block the mechanism of mifamurtide in vitro. Consequently, the combination of mifamurtide with these types of drugs is contraindicated. However, mifamurtide can be coadministered with low doses of NSAIDs. No evidence suggests mifamurtide interacts with the studied chemotherapeutics, or with the cytochrome P450 system.
Worldwide production of uranium in 2024 was 60,213 tonnes, of which 23,270 t (39%) was mined in Kazakhstan. Other important uranium mining countries are Canada (14,309 t), Namibia (7,333 t), Australia (4,598 t), Uzbekistan (4,000 t), and Russia (2,738 t). Uranium ore is mined in several ways: open pit, underground, in-situ leaching, and borehole mining. Low-grade uranium ore mined typically contains 0.01 to 0.25% uranium oxides. Extensive measures must be employed to extract the metal from its ore. High-grade ores found in Athabasca Basin deposits in Saskatchewan, Canada can contain up to 23% uranium oxides on average. Uranium ore is crushed and rendered into a fine powder and then leached with either an acid or alkali. The leachate is subjected to one of several sequences of precipitation, solvent extraction, and ion exchange. The resulting mixture, called yellowcake, contains at least 75% uranium oxides U3O8. Yellowcake is then calcined to remove impurities from the milling process before refining and conversion. Commercial-grade uranium can be produced through the reduction of uranium halides with alkali or alkaline earth metals. Uranium metal can also be prepared through electrolysis of KUF5 or UF4, dissolved in molten calcium chloride (CaCl2) and sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. Very pure uranium is produced through the thermal decomposition of uranium halides on a hot filament.
=== Modularity === This is the ability of a system or component to operate without reference to its context. The most used standardized DNA parts are BioBrick plasmids, invented by Tom Knight in 2003. Biobricks are stored at the Registry of Standard Biological Parts in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The BioBrick standard has been used by tens of thousands of students worldwide in the international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition. BioBrick Assembly Standard 10 promotes modularity by allowing BioBrick coding sequences to be spliced out and exchanged using restriction enzymes EcoRI or XbaI (BioBrick prefix) and SpeI and PstI (BioBrick suffix). Sequence overlap between two genetic elements (genes or coding sequences), called overlapping genes, can prevent their individual manipulation. To increase genome modularity, the practice of genome refactoring or improving "the internal structure of an existing system for future use, while simultaneously maintaining external system function" has been adopted across synthetic biology disciplines. Some notable examples of refactoring including the nitrogen fixation cluster and type III secretion system along with bacteriophages T7 and ΦX174. While DNA is most important for information storage, a large fraction of the cell's activities are carried out by proteins. Tools can send proteins to specific regions of the cell and to link different proteins together.
Imino acids are structurally related to amino acids, which have amino group instead of imine—a difference of single vs double-bond between nitrogen and carbon. The simplest example is dehydroglycine. D-Amino acid oxidase is an enzyme that is able to convert amino acids into imino acids. Also the direct biosynthetic precursor to the amino acid proline is the imino acid (S)-Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate (P5C).

V is the volume of the gas, T is the temperature of the gas (measured in kelvins), and k is a constant for a particular pressure and amount of gas. This law describes how a gas expands as the temperature increases; conversely, a decrease in temperature will lead to a decrease in volume. For comparing the same substance under two different sets of conditions, the law can be written as:
== Interactions == Many foods and other substances can interfere with the absorption of thyroxine. Substances that reduce absorption are aluminium- and magnesium-containing antacids, simethicone, sucralfate, cholestyramine, colestipol, and polystyrene sulfonate. Sevelamer with calcium carbonate may decrease the bioavailability of levothyroxine. Grapefruit juice may delay the absorption of levothyroxine, but based on a study of 10 healthy people aged 20–30 (eight men, two women), it may not have a significant effect on bioavailability in young adults. A study of eight women suggested that coffee may interfere with the intestinal absorption of levothyroxine, though at a level less than eating bran. Certain other substances can cause adverse effects that may be severe. Combination of levothyroxine with ketamine may cause hypertension and tachycardia; and tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants increase its toxicity. Soy, walnuts, fiber, calcium supplements, and iron supplements can also adversely affect absorption. A study found that cow's milk reduces levothyroxine absorption. To minimize interactions, a manufacturer of levothyroxine recommends after taking it, waiting 30 minutes to one hour before eating or drinking anything that is not water. They further recommend taking it in the morning on an empty stomach.
==== Fiction that references Jung's theories ==== Hermann Hesse, author of works such as Siddhartha and Steppenwolf, was treated by Joseph Lang, a student of Jung. For Hesse this began a long preoccupation with psychoanalysis, through which he came to know Jung personally. The Canadian novelist Robertson Davies made Jungian analysis a central part of his 1970 novel The Manticore. He stated in a letter, "There have been other books which describe Freudian analyses, but I know of no other that describes a Jungian analysis" adding "I was deeply afraid that I would put my foot in it, for I have never undergone one of those barnacle-scraping experiences, and knew of it only through reading. So, I was greatly pleased when some of my Jungian friends in Zurich liked it very much." The psychological novel E.E. written by Olga Tokarczuk draws from Jung's doctoral dissertation On the Psychology and Pathology of So-Called Occult Phenomena. Jung is not a character in this story, but Jung's views on the occult are extensively cited.
Protein synthesis within chloroplasts relies on two RNA polymerases. One is coded by the chloroplast DNA, the other is of nuclear origin. The two RNA polymerases may recognize and bind to different kinds of promoters within the chloroplast genome. The ribosomes in chloroplasts are similar to bacterial ribosomes.

Whether attempted via passive diffusion from 'mashed' gel pieces or the use of 'dissolvable' formulations, full quantitative recovery has never been demonstrated and/or there is concern that the necessary treatments can modify the resolved native proteoforms. Thus, while recovery of fully intact proteoforms from the gel would be optimal to ensure full sequence coverage, in-gel digestion is an effective option for subsequent LC/MS/MS analyses.
Plasmin is inactivated by proteins such as α2-macroglobulin and α2-antiplasmin. The primary protein responsible for plasmin inhibition is the α2-antiplasmin which is a serpin protein. The C-terminal of the α2-antiplasmin binds plasminogen Kringle domains via lysine residues allowing for the inhibition of plasmin. Another method of plasmin inactivation involves the cleavage of an α2-macroglobulin at the bait region (a segment of the aM that is particularly susceptible to proteolytic cleavage) by plasmin. This initiates a conformational change such that the α2-macroglobulin collapses about the plasmin. In the resulting α2-macroglobulin-plasmin complex, the active site of plasmin is sterically shielded, thus substantially decreasing the plasmin's access to protein substrates. Two additional events occur as a consequence of bait region cleavage, namely (i) a h-cysteinyl-g-glutamyl thiol ester of the α2-macroglobulin becomes highly reactive and (ii) a major conformational change exposes a conserved COOH-terminal receptor binding domain. The exposure of this receptor binding domain allows the α2-macroglobulin protease complex to bind to clearance receptors and be removed from circulation. Plasmin can also be inhibited by inhibiting its activators, inactivating PAI-1 and PAI-2 blocks the production of tPA and uPA which subsequently stop the conversion of plasminogen into plasmin. Defects in the SERPINE1 gene cause deficiencies in PA1-2. PAI-2 is only detectable during pregnancy and lacks a signal sequence it is not secreted by the cell.
During his presidential campaign, Bush's foreign policy platform included support for stronger economic and political relationships with Latin America, especially Mexico, and a reduction of involvement in "nation-building" and other small-scale military engagements. The administration pursued a national missile defense. Bush was an advocate of China's entry into the World Trade Organization. Bush began his second term with an emphasis on improving strained relations with European nations. He appointed long-time adviser Karen Hughes to oversee a global public relations campaign. Bush lauded the pro-democracy struggles in Georgia and Ukraine. In March 2006, Bush visited India on a trip focused particularly on areas of nuclear energy, counter-terrorism co-operation, and discussions that would eventually lead to the India–United States Civil Nuclear Agreement. This was in stark contrast to decades of U.S. policy, such as the stance taken by his predecessor, Bill Clinton, whose approach and response to India after the 1998 nuclear tests has been characterized as "sanctions and hectoring". Midway through Bush's second term, questions arose whether Bush was retreating from his freedom and democracy agenda, which was highlighted in policy changes toward some oil-rich former Soviet republics in central Asia. Bush signed the Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty with Russia. He withdrew U.S. support for several international agreements, including, in 2002, the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM) with Russia.
=== Mechanisms of resistance === A major mechanism of resistance against piperacillin-tazobactam is Gram-negative bacteria producing β-lactamases. Other currently known mechanisms include mutations in the active site of penicillin-binding proteins, changes in membrane efflux, or bacteria permeability. Some enzymes, such as extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) have evolved from narrow-spectrum β-lactamases due to genetic mutations, increasing their capabilities to hydrolyze much broader spectrum penicillin. Due to prior conflicting reports on the drug's affinity with ESBL-producing bacteria, piperacillin-tazobactam treatment for such is not recommended. Antibiotic resistance occurs sporadically, conferred by the continuous use of piperacillin-tazobactam in situations where it may prove to be ineffective, leading to cases where plasmid-mediated β-lactamases are being produced in bacteria that do not naturally produce it. Some Gram-positive bacteria penicillin-binding proteins such as Enterococcus faecium (PBP-5) or Staphylococcus aureus (PBP-2a) are intrinsically antibiotic resistant, consisting of relatively low affinity with piperacillin and therefore high resistance to piperacillin-tazobactam. Furthermore, mutations in penicillin-binding proteins cause fluctuations in piperacillin affinity, whereas Streptococcus pneumoniae (PBP-2b) autolytic response is significantly reduced due to decreased affinity with piperacillin.
Governor William Robinson shared the same view with the former, insisted that a Medical Department with a Principal Civil Medical Officer directly under the Government should replace the Sanitary Board. With regard of the reconstitution of the Sanitary Board, Governor William Robinson conducted a plebiscite in June 1896. Besides the reconstitution of the Sanitary Board issues, in 1894 there was a group of petitioners supported by the Unofficial Members of the Legislative Council Paul Chater and Ho Kai with 363 signatures asked for a further representations in the Colonial Government. They demanded:

The lyophilised powder is typically held at -20 C or lower in a dry, dark place. Reconstituted solutions are aliquoted and frozen to avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
Mass spectrometry is the usual confirmatory method because it measures the intact mass. Reversed-phase chromatography is used alongside it to estimate purity.
Not directly. Reported percentages depend on the chromatographic method, detection wavelength, and integration criteria, so the underlying method details matter.
It is a synthetic peptide based on a short sequence near the start of thymosin beta-4. It is supplied as a research chemical rather than as a licensed pharmaceutical product.
